Day 7 - Alto de la Penya de Sella
Alto de la Peña de Sella, Tagarina Valley- about 3 hours -10 km - 370m ascent The Peña de Sella rises almost fifteen hundred feet behind the village and is the great geological feature of the valley. We drive out of Sella and up beyond the Peña to the road up the Tagarina valley along which we ascend to park at the Font Pouet Alemany. From here there are four or five variations on the route - I´ll detail the walk along the ridge, which makes the longest and most demanding choice, but the other routes, although shorter, are equally appealing and pass through varied countryside. From the Font, at the end of the metalled road, we go up the track a few hundred yards and then strike off towards the ridge past a little-used farmhouse. After scrambling up some Bancales, we make the first part of the ridge - a switchback of some 3 separate peaks, the highest of which, the Alto de la Peña de Sella, reaches 1157m. The ridge is easy going, if dramatic, and the terrain underfoot resembles nothing more than the limestone pavements of the Yorkshire Dales. All along the ridge there are tremendous views of the Realet ridge beyond Sella, the Puig Campana of course, and away down to the coast and the Mediterranean towns. The ridge eventually drops to a track which we follow for about a km to the flat land near the Mas D´Alt, a small country house recently and elegantly restored. If the owners are not in residence, it´s where we´ll have our picnic.. After lunch, there´s a track which winds down through trees above the Tagarina valley to return to our starting point. A last evening meal at Casaroc will be provided y Liz Guide : Martin Gill Round: Walk 24, page 79
